Health and safety
Health and safety 1.0 Introduction Health and Safety is a prime concern in every field. John Bartlett says that ââ¬Å"Appreciating the general concept of the need for good health and safety is very different from understanding how the specifics apply to the dynamic of a particular workspaceâ⬠, Workplace laws Safety and Health Practitioner.â⬠Health and Safety is the prime importance to every Air Freight Services, who will seek to conduct its business in such a way as to avoid harm to its employees and all others who may be affected directly or indirectly by its activities. Every Air Freight Service have a separate department for Health and Safety and in some big Air Freight Services research on Health and Safety is done once in year to ensure that all the employees are happy from the point of Health and Safety or not even customs inspect the every Air Freight Service once or twice in a year. This project is all about the Health and Safety management system. Main aim of this research is to help the employees to work safely and avoid accidents by finding main issues of Health and Safety occurred in Air Freight Services and solutions to remove those issues. Responsibilities of management and employees toward Health and Safety in Air freight Services should also be investigated in this research. Main aim of this research is to improve the health and safety in airfreight services by improving the Management system of health and safety and as researcher working as a Ware House Operator in Scanwell Freight Services (SFS), so I choose this organisation for my research. This organisation is ready to help me in my research. As we know no one becomes perfect but at least we can try to become perfect. There is lot of issues in every air freight services and everyone wants to resolve these issues. To resolve the big issue it will require lot of investment. But at least we can resolve the small issues because small issues sometime give birth to big issues. In this research I am trying to find all the small and big issues and put forward to company directors just as recommendations. In Scanwell Freight services there are lots of small issues which are ignored and can solve very easily by just understanding and cooperating with each other. Some issues are big which require wealth of company but as the manager of company Mr Naresh Nandani gives me permission for this research to find out all the issues regarding Health and Safety in company. It will help the company to become perfect in Health and Safety. For Health and Safety everyone wants to be perfect because the safety of employee is the prime concern of every company. This research will help an Air Freight Services to improve the Health and Safety Department and responsibilities of management and employees towards Health and Safety. Every person on this earth work only to live the life happily and calmly, if person dies in accident while working then its a big shame on a company who take the work from the employees but not considered their safety while working. So this research will help Air Freight Services and employees of Air Freight Services to take care of health and safety precautions while working. This research also helps me to get the experience and also create my good image in front of managers and directors of the company. The issues which are considered in this research are small and big issues. Small issues can be removed by just understanding and cooperation but big issue requires time and wealth of company. It all depends on the management of Scanwell, how they react for these issues. Directors have the responsibility for the health and safety in every organisation. 1.1 Background of Research The Management system is based on nationally and internationally agreed principles, defined and developed to provide the necessary strength, flexibility and appropriate foundation for the development of a sustainable health and safety culture throughout the all air freight services. The practical recommendations of the procedures and arrangements with in this research can be used by all those who have a responsibility for managing Health and Safety activities in Air Freight Services. The outcome of this research can be used by Air Freight services as a practical tool to achieving continual improvement of health and safety performance. While working as a warehouse operator in S.F.S researcher found lots of small and big issues of health and safety which can be easily removed by just co-operating and understating between employees and management. Researcher wants to avoid the accidents to him and other workers thats why this research is conducted with the help of employees, management and managers permission. 1.2 Importance and Motivation of the Study Every person on this earth work only to live the life happily and calmly, if person dies by accident while working then its a big problem of a company who take the work from the employees but not considered their safety while working. Topic of research or motivation of research always comes from authors desires. As researcher already mentioned that he is working as a ware house operator in Scanwell Freight Services, so while working researcher found lots of issues regarding Health and Safety then researcher discuss some issues with my managers and operational managers as well of organisation and ask them that researcher want to do research on health and safety information for this organisation and they motivate researcher by saying a very good words ââ¬Å"We appreciate your idea and we are with youâ⬠and by finding the issues and solutions for the issues researcher can help my workmates too. Importance of this research is that this research is not only for S.F.S every organisation can take advantage from this research because Health and Safety is a major issue in every organisation. 1.3 Objectives To identify and investigate the issues which create/ increase the risk of Health and Safety while working in Air freight Services. To find out the solutions for issues of Health and Safety comes while working in Air Freight Service. To critically analyse the factors of health and safety which reduce the risk of accidents while working? 1.4 Research Question/Hypothesis More employees and managements responsibility towards Health and Safety in Air freight services reduce the risk factor in health and safety in the organisation. Good employee training and induction programmes to reduce the risk factor of Health and safety in the organisation. Contingent planning and its managements help to reduce the risk factor of Health and Safety in the organisation 1.5 Research Questions What are the issues of risks of health and safety which come while working in air freight services? What are the factors which reduce the risk of health and safety while working in air freight services? What are recommended strategy of the identified issues which reduce the risk factors while working in air freight services? 1.6 Scope of the project Every freight services want to improve the health and safety within the organisation. As I am doing this research on Scanwell Freight Services, it will help our organisation to become perfect in Health and Safety. Scope of this research is very wide. This research will help an Air Freight Services to improve the Health and Safety Department and responsibilities of management and employees towards Health and Safety. This research also can be used by other organisations to maintain the Health and Safety in organisations. When customs investigate the organisation we can show them the new research and removed issues regarding Health and Safety. This thing also improves the organisation image in market and everyone wants to work with this organisation because of name in market and name in customs regarding Health and Safety. This research also shows the ways of improving management responsibilities regarding Health and Safety and channels of communication with employees. 1.7 The outcomes of this project are Provide the knowledge about safety while working in Air Freight Services. Get the knowledge how to improve the safety while working under pressure and deadline. Provide the information of responsibilities of employees and management towards Health and Safety. There are following techniques researcher identify from academic literature and will be able to develop research methodology for this project. 1.8 Research approach Qualitative research approach will be use for this research based upon face to face interview with close ended and open ended questions with employees and management. From literature and discussion on various traditions and approaches to good research, there are 4 strategies considered (Denzin and Lincoln, 1994; Johannessen, 1992). Theoretical Research Quantitative Research Qualitative Research Participatory Research 1.9 Research philosophy (Positivism and phenomenology) Easterby- Smith (1999) says that there are three main reasons why this whole mental exercise regarding the research philosophy you should follow in your research is important: It can help you to choose the methods that you will use. Knowledge of research philosophy will enable and assist you to evaluate different research methods and avoid inappropriate use and unnecessary work by identifying the limitation of particular approaches at an early stage of your study. It may help you to be creative and innovative by either choosing or adapting research methods that are, as yet, outside your experience. In this research positivism and phenomenology philosophy will use. Positivism promotes a more objective interpretation of reality, using hard data from surveys and experiments, while phenomenology is concerned with methods that examine people and their social behaviour (Gill and Johnson, 1997). 1.10 Research method (Qualitative and Quantitative) In this research the Qualitative and Quantitative methods will use but the main method used is qualitative. In Quantitative research data can collect from case studies, other researches, internet, pie charts, ghant charts and books etc. Means old data on the other hand qualitative method contains data collected from face to face interviews, telephonic interviews, questioners etc. Means new data (Best and Khan, 1989: 89-90). In this research qualitative approach will use because every freight services have different types of issues and all these issues occurred while working, so only employees and management can find the issues. For collection of data and to find issues of health and safety face to face interviews requires with employees and management which shows that the approach should be qualitative. Qualitative research requires time and money. 1.11 Research strategy Research strategy refers to the general approaches and goals of a research study. The selection of research strategy is usually determined by the kind of question you plan to address and kind of answer you hope to obtain- in general terms, what you hope to accomplish. Research strategy use in this research is descriptive research strategy. Descriptive strategy means intended to answer question about the current state of individual variables for a specific group of individuals (Authors Frederick J. Gravetter, Lori-Ann B. Forzano, 2008) e.g. this research is made on health and safety of Scanwell freight services and on every single field which require health and safety. 1.12 Primary and secondary data (Qualitative and Qualitative) In this research Primary and Secondary both research will be done but according to need. Firstly research starts with secondary and then primary will be done like by interviews employees and management. 1.13 Sampling Random and systematic sampling will use in this research. First employees are selected randomly from different fields and interview will be done and the identified issues put in the system according to the priority. 1.14 Data Collection Qualitative and Quantitative data both methods of data collection will use for this research like face to face interview with close ended and open ended questions with employees or other relevant respondents like managers, experts of health and safety. Direct face to face or telephonic interview will be done to collect the information from management and employees by using video phone in this way researcher will be able to identify the respondent is the right person and the same person which has been chosen as it is the ethics of research and through this researcher will be able to develop the validity and reliability of the research.. 1.15 Data recording Complete moral thought will be done. All the data will record very safely to avoid leakage. To record data Microsoft office tools will be used. Evidence of data also will be saved and Harvard reference method will be used. 1.16 Target groups For this research Scanwell Freight Service UK is taken as an example and research will be done on Scanwell Freight Service UK .Health and Safety of employees while working inside Scanwell Freight Service UK will be studied and analyzed. Main target is employees of Scanwell Freight Service UK. 1.17 Resources used for the research analysis As I am working as a Ware House Operator in Scanwell Freight Services UK, so main resource will be Scanwell Freight Services Shambu House Amberley Way, Hounslow TW4 6BH Main aim of this research is to improve the health and safety in airfreight services by improving the Management system of health and safety and as researcher working as a Ware House Operator in Scanwell Freight Services (SFS), so I choose this organisation for my research. This organisation is ready to help me in my research. 1.18 Research Limitation From my point of view there is no limitation of this research but the issues which I am considering in this research are big issues which require a wealth of the company. But to remove all the small issues of this company it requires no wealth just require the understanding and cooperation of all the employees. If company wants to remove the big issues it also require long time because I am considering some construction issues too in this research. So for construction it requires a time. These issues cannot solve by understating it requires wealth and time. Chapter 2 Literature Review 2.1 Introduction Literature review is a secondary data. For this research all the secondary data comes from internet and mentor health and safety services which contain all the safety information and responsibilities of management regarding health and safety. In freight services its compulsory for everyone who works with the organisation should know all the information about Health and Safety. This literature review considers all the safety information which is necessary to knows by everyone. Literature review is an examination of scholarly information and research based information on a specific topic. In other words its a review of whats known, not suspected or assumed, about a specific subject. Its goal is to create a complete, accurate representation of the knowledge and research based theory available on a topic. An integral part of a research process, then, is gaining an understanding what is and isnt known about the reality of a situation, event, or circumstances. One simple explanation for the need to work toward that understanding is this: if people dont know reality, then how can they develop a research study or a plan to address a problem or concern with any effectiveness? An understanding of reality is essential to avoid creating a plan that addresses fiction rather than reality. So, researchers, regardless of academic level or professional position, use appropriate quality literature to accomplish the goals. If it is applied review, it will to survey known information about a topic and help identify information that is not yet known so the best decision for action or for further examination of a situation can be made. In other words, filling a gap in the literature isnt the main goal. The main goal is to understand the missing and existing knowledge. The question or questions used sho uld guide that kind of applied knowledge acquisition. If its a simple review, the question will be more general, as will the survey of literature conducted. The question will be one that dedicates an overview of the information provided in numerous sources on the topic being considered. It will also be one that lays groundwork for future research of greater depth. In other word, it will provide insight into areas that will each be reviewable in greater depth in future research. 2.2 Literature Review 2.2.1 Management Responsibilities towards Health and Safety The main responsibility regarding safety and health is always at the highest level of system which is the Director of the organisation, but still the duty is divided into all the levels according to the needs and control. These Responsibilities also includes: The legislative body should ensure that the research on Health and Safety will be held at least 2 times in a year. This research will maintain the Health and Safety in the organisation and also employees get the chance to talk about their issues and recommendation. It also increases the faith of employees and customs that inspect the freight services regarding health and safety. The legislative body of all the workers should ensure that the system for the health and safety must and also maintained regularly according to needs of the health and safety principles. Table for the system should be prepared and always on the notice board which will help the workers to go for complaints and also helps new workers to maintains health and safety needs. Principles should be developed and communicated all over the organisation. If the system needs improvements or any changes take place it should be communicated all over the management. All the resources which requires for the daily needs for workers always available in organisation, so management have to take care of that. These resources can be safety jackets, safety gloves, safety shoes and safety signs etc. Duties of the workers should be clearly explained and make sure that no changes take place in duties unless it will discussed with the top level employees e.g. Fork lift drivers only drives fork lift no others have access to drive the fork lift without permissions from the floor managers. Training and education will be given to new appointed staff before starts work; it will reduce the chances of accident. Employee Responsibilities towards Health and Safety Employees responsibilities towards health and safety should be must because the duties are given according to experience and qualifications. They have to do their job only because work in air freight services is very dangerous, only thats why everybody have their own duties e.g. one person whose duty is only off loading the PMCS and BINS from the lorries only do the offloading because one wrong step can take the life away. Forklift connects to the Lories and rollers are picked up PMC which is appx 3 to 4 ton heavy comes with a high speed towards fork lift. If inexperienced person sitting on forklift, forklift shakes with the weight and PMC fall downs. It may give birth to a huge accident which can easily take the life away of the person who picks the roller up and forklift driver too. All the duties should be under section 7 and 8 of the health and safety at work. In Scanwell freight services all the employees have different duties there are 5 drivers, 2 forklift drivers drives only inside building for handling pallets and raking the palletized vegetables, one off loader and 2 person for breaking the PMCS and BINS and floor manager makes the tickets and keep eye on every employee to make sure that all the health and safety precautions to be taken care or not. Others are office staff. One very good thing I like in this organisation is that the director physically comes every night to make sure that no body miss use their duties. He always says precaution and safety first. Employees should have to take care of the following steps: Take responsible care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Cooperate with management to meet the employers legal duties and work in accordance with company procedures. Not intentionally or recklessly interface with or misuse anything provided in the interest of health, safety or welfare and refrain from actions (or inactivity) which might endanger themselves, or others. Demonstrate their commitment to health and safety by their behaviour and cooperate in the investigation of accidents and incidents. Use all equipments safely, including that provided for their personal protection and report to management any defects in equipments or other danger at once, or as soon as it is safe to do so. Comply with all safety instructions or procedure and not undertaken any tasks that they are not trained for. 2.2.3 Health and Safety Organisation Chart Normally the system is same in all the air freight services but some time depends upon the size of the organisation. Scanwell Freight Services flow chart for Health and Safety System 2.2.4 Assignment of Individuals For effective arrangements of health and safety the duties of folks and tasks should be very visibly identifies. For policy making director should be delegated and day to day safety issues goes to a line manager or floor manager. Management can develop polices and give recommendation for issues comes in organisation but the last decision is of the directors of the company. If the issues are urgent and small then it can be easily solve on the basis of the mangers and assistance managers. Because managers have the right to spend specific amount of money on the organisation by own. Responsibilities should be divided into two categories General Specific General Responsibilities According to rules and policies the general responsibilities goes to Director Employees Director responsibilities are as follows: Director has to give first priority to safety issues to improve the health and safety or to remove the issues comes regarding health and safety in an organisation Director has to ensure that objectives outline of system of safety and health will be clear and practical by the person who controls it. Director has to ensure that the principles and policies of health and safety should be checked regularly and changed according to conditions. Director has to ensure that the policies and principles will reach to every person attached to company and also ensure that all the safety hazards will be known by all the employees. Director has to ensure that no resources and substance should be used without having proper hazards and controls. Employees responsibilities are as follows: Main responsibility of employees is to always take care of their own safety while working and the others who working with them. Help the system of health and safety by doing their duties in proper manner and according to the procedures of the company. Rash driving of forklifts should be avoided to avoid accidents because by rash driving of forklift somebody who working in warehouse can be injured and even driver of forklift also be injured if accident occur. Behaviour should be cool, anger should be controlled. Use of alcohol and smoking should be avoided inside the warehouse, alcohol may become cause of anger and smoking inside warehouse may become cause of fire. Employees should not take the job in hand for which they are not trained. Specific Responsibilities Specific responsibilities will be given to specific persons at specific levels like Director responsibilities is to be check and sign the principles and policies of health and safety. Operational mangers have to check whether all the resources required for work available or not. Floor managers have main duties regarding health and safety because employees are working on floor in front of floor managers. All individuals have to control their responsible areas. Health and Safety responsible employee have to check and control all the safety equipments and make sure that all the standards meant for Health and Safety controlled and maintained by employees and all the employees working according to tasks assigns. Action should taken Make sure that all the workers know about their tasks and agree to their household tasks. Strengthen the memo contained in the principles and rule by different activities. 2.2.5 Sign up Assistance for Health and Safety For assistance in Health and Safety there are lots of organisations and qualified peoples, they got the certificates for Health and Safety. So every organisation hires certified peoples for Health and Safety or tie ups with organisations work for Health and Safety services. These organisations assist freight services to maintaining the health and safety in organisations. Scanwell Freight services also sign up NewWest Mentor Services for consulting to take guidance and advice regarding Health and Safety. NetWest Mentor services are designed to take care of all the laws of Health and Safety in organisation. It includes premises, tools, machines, safety equipments and most important is employees safety while working. 2.2.6 Communication of Health and Safety Policies and principles within the organisation So frequently we hear of a breakdown in communication being the cause of Health and Safety incidents, some with devastating consequences. The sad fact is that often these situations could have been easily avoided by implementing simple procedure to improve communications between working parties. An incident at West Coast Traincare in 2004 illustrates only too well the devastating effect of poor communication and the price is paid. The situation arose when employee Mr Birch was replacing the brake pads underneath a set of carriages at deport in Oxley, Wolverhampton. Two colleagues also working on the train conducting brake tests on the attached locomotive. During the course of testing, one of them released the trains breaking system causing the train to move forward. Mr Birch right hand was subsequently crushed by one of the carriage wheels, causing injuries that resulted in the amputation of all his fingers and two knuckles. HSE Investigation inspector, Steve Turmer, commented at the time,â⬠Very simple steps could have prevented this accident. The staff was not adequately protected and there is lack of communication between the various groupsâ⬠. West Coast Traincare pleaded guilty to breaching section 2(1) of Health and Safety at work etc. Act 1974 in that it did n ot ensure the safety of persons in its employment or operate under the safe system of work for staff undertaking maintenance activities. The company was fined à £13,000 with cost of à £3500. Effective Health and Safety is not a just paper exercise and companies must refrain from a ââ¬Ëtick box system of compliance. General communication and awareness exercise can help to ensure that the intentions laid out in Health and Safety policy and supporting procedure are implemented and adhered to. There is no legal requirement to communication in set fashion and it is down to the employee to choose the right method according to the need. However there are a certain pointers which will improve the impact of any chosen communication method. In other words of poet William Butler Yeats,â⬠Think like a wise man but communicate in the language of the peopleâ⬠. This is echoed by workplace laws Health and Safety Consultants Bill Scholes who suggests, ââ¬Å"Understanding your audience is the key to delivering the Health and Safety message and the key to identifying the right mode of communication.â⬠John Bartlett says that ââ¬Å"Appreciating the general concept of the need for good health and safety is very different from understanding how the specifics apply to the dynamic of a particular workspaceâ⬠, Workplace laws Safety and Health Practitioner.â⬠Therfore in order to communicate risk management effectively its got to be made relevant and pertinent to the industryâ⬠. The laws also needs to be interpreted sensible, Chris Streatfeild of Greenstreet Bremanâ⬠The key principle in communicating health and safety is proportionality. It shouldnt go over the top so that were condemning every activity as unsafe. You need to conduct a risk assessment but what u need to do as a result of that needs to be proportionate to the risk identifiedâ⬠Diana Wright says thatâ⬠within the communication message, employees need to remind that down to them as wellâ⬠. It is essential to promote individual ownership so employees avoid the ââ¬Ëits not my department altitude all the commonly found within the workplace. A very similar view point is taken by John Bartlett who reminds us, ââ¬Å"It is important to engender a feeling of responsibility when communicating Health and Safety as this empower peoples. Its not about wrapping employees in cotton wool but giving people the information and confidence to make sensible decisions about how they workâ⬠. The main types of communication are formal (including health and safety meetings, trainings and newsletters) and informal (walkabouts, one to one unofficial chats and open forums); the HSE recommends a mix of both. The size and structure of an organization, diversification of roles and geographical location of employees will all have an effect on determining the best communication.

Breaking Unhealthy Habits through Continuous Realization, Planning, and Actualization Essay
The unhealthy habits of a person may differ from another in terms of its nature, quantity, and occurrence. In fact, it is common and quite predictable for an individual to develop at least one unhealthy habit (Van Dusen, 2008). Unhealthy habits may include common examples such as cigarette smoking, frequent and excessive drinking of alcoholic beverages, and overeating unhealthy food variants. As one can see from the examples, unhealthy habits are usually common practices of numerous individuals; thus, they are generally overlooked. However, there is a reason as to why such habits are termed as unhealthy. The reason for the term is that oneââ¬â¢s personal health and welfare are compromised through the practice of such habits. Hence, keeping unhealthy habits are a considerable risk to an individual. Therefore, there is a need for individuals to take action and finally break unhealthy habits. The process of breaking unhealthy habits can be divided into three major segments which are realization, planning, and actualization. In terms of realization, an individual must assess the unhealthy habits that he or she currently practices and must understand the possible repercussions by continuing such negative practices. In fact, it has been determined that the problem as to why people rarely break free from unhealthy habits is that they do not realize the dangers associated with their actions (Van Dusen, 2008). If an individual will completely be able to understand the negative effects of his or her unhealthy habits, then questions regarding the reason why such habits should be or should not be continued will arise. For example, a male smoker may think that cigarette smoking is good since it helps in keeping the alertness of a person; on the other hand, he may also think about the detrimental effects that smoking has on the body such as increased risks of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. When the individual finally realizes that the negative aspects generally outweigh the positive ones, then the next segment of breaking unhealthy habits can be initiated. Planning pertains to the possible actions that one can make in order to move away from continuously doing an unhealthy habit. Using the male smoker again as an example, he may plan to eliminate all the cigarettes that he currently has and remove all related objects or signs as well. In addition, the smoker may also opt to consult experts in cases of nicotine addiction in order to gain further knowledge and potential solutions to his problem. The expert may provide medical solutions to such a problem by offering specific sets of drugs to help the body adjust to the condition of being nicotine free. In this sense, an individual with an unhealthy habit may plan to conduct actions that will prevent further occurrence of the habit itself by eliminating the root causes and associated objects or consulting with consulting experts or medical professionals when applicable. Hence, planning to break an unhealthy habit may be conducted personally or with the help of others. The last segment of the process pertains to actualization. This is quite self-explanatory since planning will be of no use if not followed. Therefore, a person that has assessed and planned what he or she must do in order to break an unhealthy habit must not only start out his or her plan but stick to it as well. Given this, an individual that initiates ways in order to remove the unhealthy habit but ends up quitting halfway will obviously be not successful in eliminating the unhealthy habit. Thus, one can only determine that a person has broken free of unhealthy habits if the person does not return to doing it for a long period of time. In this sense, breaking an unhealthy habit is not defined by being free of such unhealthy actions in the short period after the actualization of the plans. Keeping clean of unhealthy habits requires continuous conviction and belief that returning to the practice of unhealthy habits will only bring forth negative consequences. Therefore, breaking unhealthy habits and maintaining a state free of such habits is not easy, but through a continuous sense and understanding of the three segments discussed, it is highly probable that the individual will be successful in his or her pursuit.

In his trial, he pled guilty to the six killings, also the nearly 1,500 fires he had set in and around New York and he was sentence to 25 years to life for each of the murder. His sentencing hearing was dramatic because he tried jumping out of the window in the seventh floor courtroom when he heard the judges decision. I feel like the reason why he became a serial killer was because he didnt grew up with his biological parents and he didnt have the love of them, his adoptive mom would hit him just because he would come home with sand i n his head and he was bullied at school for being chubby.

Civil Disobedience By Henry David Thoreau - 888 Words
Before discussing whether or not Civil Disobedience is an appropriate weapon in a democracy, one must understand what Civil Disobedience is and how it was developed. The definition of civil disobedience is simple: the refusal to obey laws as a way of forcing the government to do or change something. The man who developed the undertones of Civil Disobedience was Henry David Thoreau. Several key figures looked to his famous paper, The Duty of Civil Disobedience, for inspiration. In a Democracy, Civil Disobedience is not an appropriate weapon in the fight for justice. Henry David Thoreau was born on July 12, 1817 in Concord, Massachusetts to John Thoreau and Cynthia Dunbar. Thoreau studied at Harvard College and took various coursesâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦He also says that if one disagrees with the law, they should remove themselves and get as far away as they can. In his essay, he states that he does not think that any reform in the government is possible. He continues by sayin g that petitioning and voting do not do anything for the common people. Henry David Thoreau uses his experiences in jail to effectively prove his points. In my opinion, in a democracy, Civil Disobedience is not an appropriate weapon in the fight for justice. By definition a democracy is an organization or situation in which everyone is treated equally and has equal rights, appropriate is ââ¬Å"to take or use (something) especially in a way that is illegal, unfair, etc.â⬠, weapon is ââ¬Å"something (such as a skill, idea, or tool) that is used to win a contest or achieve somethingâ⬠, justice is ââ¬Å"the process or result of using laws to fairly judge and punish crimes and criminalsâ⬠, and Civil Disobedience is ââ¬Å"the refusal to obey laws as a way of forcing the government to do or change somethingâ⬠. By these definitions, it is never appropriate to use Civil Disobedience to get justice. In a true democracy, if there ever was a problem or something one did not agree with, one could bring it up to a leader and they would have to acknowledge the problem. They would have to do this due to the fact that everyone has equal right in a true democracy. Everyone would have to vote, and getShow MoreRelatedCivil Disobedience By Henry David Thoreau975 Words à |à 4 Pages Henry David Thoreau was a very influential writer in the 1800s and still is today. Last Sacrifice Chapter Eighteen Free Essays
I SPRANG UP FROM THE bed, relieved that I didnââ¬â¢t fall over. My head still hurt, but I no longer felt dizzy, which hopefully meant I really had evaded a concussion. Glancing at an alarm clock as I left Sonyaââ¬â¢s bedroom, I saw that Iââ¬â¢d been in Lissaââ¬â¢s head for a few hours. We will write a custom essay sample on Last Sacrifice Chapter Eighteen or any similar topic only for you Order Now Her test had been far more extensive than Iââ¬â¢d realized. In the living room, I found an almost comical sight. Victor and Robert stood there, in the flesh, taking in the surrounding details. Even Robert seemed to be with us mentally this time. Only, whereas Victor was studying everything in his calculating way, Robertââ¬â¢s attention was fixed on Sonya. His eyes bugged out in astonishment. Dimitri, meanwhile, hadnââ¬â¢t altered his position near Sonya or put away the stake at her throat. It was clear from his stance and watchful gaze, however, that he regarded the brothers as a new threat and was tryingââ¬âimpossiblyââ¬âto stay on guard against everything. He seemed relieved to see me and have some backup. Sonya had gone perfectly still within her chains, which I didnââ¬â¢t like at all. It made me think she was planning something. Her red eyes narrowed. The whole situation was tense and dangerous, but a tiny part of me felt smug satisfaction as I studied Victor more closely. The dream meetings had been deceptive. Just as I could shift my appearance in dreams, Victor had made himself look stronger and healthier in those visits than he actually was in real life. Age, disease, and life on the run were taking their toll. Dark shadows lined his eyes, and his graying hair seemed thinner than it had a month ago. He looked haggard and tired, but I knew he was still dangerous. ââ¬Å"So,ââ¬â¢ I said, hands on hips. ââ¬Å"You managed to find us.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s one lake in this town,ââ¬â¢ said Victor. ââ¬Å"One blue house. Maybe you had trouble with those directions, but for the rest of us, it wasnââ¬â¢t that difficult.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Well, if youââ¬â¢re so smart, whatââ¬â¢s your plan now?ââ¬â¢ I asked. I was trying to stall as I frantically thought about what my plan was. Iââ¬â¢d wanted to capture Victor and Robert but didnââ¬â¢t know how. Since we had to split our attention between them and Sonya, Dimitri and I couldnââ¬â¢t team up. I wished we had leftover chain. Aside from physically subduing the brothers, we would also specifically need to restrain their hands to reduce their ability to use magic. ââ¬Å"Since youââ¬â¢re so smart,ââ¬â¢ countered Victor, ââ¬Å"I assumed youââ¬â¢d have already obtained the needed information.ââ¬â¢ I gestured toward Sonya. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s not exactly forthcoming.ââ¬â¢ Victorââ¬â¢s eyes fell on her. ââ¬Å"Sonya Karp. Youââ¬â¢ve changed since I last saw you.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going to kill you all,ââ¬â¢ Sonya snarled. ââ¬Å"And consume you one by one. Normally, Iââ¬â¢d start with the human and work up to the Moroi, but â⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢ She glanced at Dimitri and me, her face full of rage. ââ¬Å"I think Iââ¬â¢ll save you two for last and drag out your suffering.ââ¬â¢ She paused and almost comically added, ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve annoyed me the most.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Do all Strigoi go through some boot camp and learn all the same threats? Itââ¬â¢s a wonder you donââ¬â¢t cackle too.ââ¬â¢ I turned back to Victor. ââ¬Å"See? Not that easy. Weââ¬â¢ve tried everything. Beating it out, torturing it out. Sydney went through the names of all her relatives. No reaction.ââ¬â¢ Victor studied Sydney in detail for the first time. ââ¬Å"So. Your pet Alchemist.ââ¬â¢ Sydney didnââ¬â¢t move. I knew she had to be scared of facing someone who was both a vampire and a dangerous criminal. I had to give her points for meeting his stare unflinchingly. ââ¬Å"Young,ââ¬â¢ Victor mused. ââ¬Å"But of course she would be. I imagine itââ¬â¢s the only way you could manipulate her into this little escapade.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m here by choice,ââ¬â¢ replied Sydney. Her expression stayed calm and confident. ââ¬Å"No one manipulated me.ââ¬â¢ Abeââ¬â¢s blackmail wasnââ¬â¢t really relevant at the moment. ââ¬Å"Look, if you wanted to keep torturing me with your not-funny comments, you could have just kept invading my dreams,ââ¬â¢ I snapped. ââ¬Å"If you donââ¬â¢t have anything useful to offer, then get out of here and let us wait until hunger weakens Sonya.ââ¬â¢ And by get out of here, I meant: foolishly think youââ¬â¢re going to leave so that I can knock your heads together and drag you back to the guardians. ââ¬Å"We can help,ââ¬â¢ said Victor. He touched his brother lightly on the arm. Robert flinched, jerking his eyes from Sonya to Victor. ââ¬Å"Your methods were destined to fail. If you want answers, thereââ¬â¢s only one way toââ¬âââ¬Ë Sonya made her move. Dimitri was still right next to her, but heââ¬â¢d also been keeping an eye on the rest of us. And of course, Iââ¬â¢d been completely focused on the Victor drama as well. It was probably the best opening Sonya could have hoped for. With crazy Strigoi strength, she bucked up from the chair. The chain was wrapped around her over and over, but her quick movement and strength were enough to snap the chain in two places. The rest still encircled her, but I knew perfectly well even one opening was enough for her to eventually bust out. Distracted or not, Dimitri was on her in a flash, and a second later, so was I. She was flailing in the chair, using every bit of her strength and speed to shake off the chains. If she got loose, I knew sheââ¬â¢d put up another fierce fight. Dimitri and I met eyes briefly, and I knew we were thinking the same things. First, how were we going to re-restrain her? The chain could probably be rebound, but weââ¬â¢d need to unwind it and start over, which would be next to impossible. We also both knew he and I might not be able to take her down a second time, and now we had innocents around. They couldnââ¬â¢t fight, but Sonya might be able to use them to her advantage somehow. All w e could do was try to keep her down. Holding her against a flat surface like the floor would have been much easier than the unwieldy recliner. It shook as she fought against us, and we struggled to get a good position on the chair. Dimitri had his stakeââ¬â Iââ¬â¢d set mine down earlierââ¬âand he raked it against her skin, giving us some advantage in the struggle. She screamed in rage, and I clung to the hope we might tire her out. Probably not. Weââ¬â¢d break first. My aching head was proof enough that I wasnââ¬â¢t in peak condition. I saw a flash of movement in my periphery, setting off new alarms. Robert Doru was heading toward usââ¬âand he had a silver stake in his hand. The sight was so bizarre and unexpected that I was slow to alert Dimitri. When my sluggish mind suddenly kicked back to life, it was too late. ââ¬Å"No!ââ¬â¢ I shrieked, seeing Robert raise the stake. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t kill her!ââ¬â¢ Dimitri turned and saw Robert then, but there was nothing he could do. Dimitri and I had created the perfect opportunity. We were holding Sonya still, and with her chest vulnerable, Robert had a clean shot. Frantically, I wondered what to do. If I stopped him, Iââ¬â¢d release Sonya. If I didnââ¬â¢t stop him, he might kill our only chance at finding out whoââ¬â Too late. The stake plunged down with a force that astonished me. Lissa had had a very difficult time staking Dimitri, and Iââ¬â¢d assumed the same would be true for someone like Robert, who was older and seemed so fragile. But, no. He still had to use two hands, but the stake went firmly into Sonyaââ¬â¢s chest, piercing her heart. Sonya let out an intense scream. A brilliant, blinding white light suddenly filled the room, just as an unseen force blasted me away. I hit a wall, my brain barely registering the pain. The small house shook, and with one hand, I tried to grab something and brace myself. I squeezed my eyes shut but could still see starbursts. Time slowed. My heartbeat slowed. Thenââ¬âit all stopped. Everything. The light. The tremors. I breathed normally. All was quiet and still, as though Iââ¬â¢d imagined what had just happened. I blinked, trying to bring my eyes back into focus and assess the situation. I did my best to scramble clumsily to my feet and saw Dimitri was doing the same. He looked like heââ¬â¢d also been knocked over but had caught the wall for support, rather than smashing into it. Robert was lying flat out on the floor, and Victor rushed over to help him. Sydney just stood frozen. And Sonya? ââ¬Å"Unbelievable,ââ¬â¢ I whispered. Sonya was still in the armchair, and from the way she was sitting back, it was obvious that sheââ¬â¢d been blasted by the same force that had hit the rest of us. The chains were still around her, but sheââ¬â¢d stopped struggling. On her lap was the silver stake Robert had held only moments ago. Sonya managed to wiggle a hand out of the chain, just enough for her fingers to brush against the stakeââ¬â¢s surface. Her eyes widened with wonderââ¬âeyes that were a rich, azure blue. Robert had brought Sonya Karp back to life. She was no longer Strigoi. When Lissa had saved Dimitri, Iââ¬â¢d felt the magicââ¬â¢s power through the bond, giving me the full and overwhelming experience of it all. Witnessing it now, without the firsthand knowledge provided from Lissa, was still just as incredible. Victor was preoccupied with Robert, but the rest of us couldnââ¬â¢t stop staring at Sonya in amazement. I kept looking for anythingââ¬âanythingââ¬âthat might give the slightest hint of her previous existence. There was none. Her skin bore the typical Moroi paleness, but it was still filled with the warmth of life, with the faintest tinge of colorââ¬ânot like the Strigoi, who were completely devoid of pigment. Her eyes were bloodshot, but that was from her rapidly forming tears. There was no red ring around her irises. And the look in those eyes â⬠¦ there was no cruelty or malice. They were not the eyes of someone who had just threatened to kill us all. Her eyes were all shock and fear and confusion. I couldnââ¬â¢t tear my gaze from her. A miracle. Another miracle. Even after seeing Lissa restore Dimitri, some secret part of me had believed I would never witness anything like it again. That was how miracles worked. Once in a lifetime. Thereââ¬â¢d been a lot of talk about using spirit to save Strigoi everywhere, talk that had faded when other dramaââ¬âsuch as the murder of a queenââ¬â took precedence at Court. The shortage of spirit users had also made the idea unpopular, and besides, everyone knew the difficulties involved with a Moroi staking a Strigoi. If trained guardians died fighting Strigoi, how could a Moroi stake one? Well, here was the answer: a subdued Strigoi. A Moroi could manage staking one with two hands, especially with guardian backup. The possibilities made me reel. Robertââ¬â¢s magic was strong, but he was old and frail. Yet, if he had still done this, could any spirit user? Heââ¬â¢d almost made it look easy. Could Adrian do it? Could Lissa do it again? A miracle. Sonya Karp was a living, breathing miracle. And suddenly, she began screaming. It started off as kind of a low wail and rapidly grew in volume. The noise snapped me to attention, but I didnââ¬â¢t exactly know how to respond. Dimitri did. His stake fell from his hand, and he rushed to Sonyaââ¬â¢s side, where he began trying to free her from the chains. She floundered at his touch, but her efforts no longer packed the supernatural strength of an undead monster seeking revenge. These were the motions of someone desperately, terribly afraid. Iââ¬â¢d wrapped those chains pretty securely, but Dimitri had them off in seconds. Once Sonya was free, he sat in the chair and pulled her to him, letting her bury her face against his chest and sob. I swallowed. Dimitri had also wept when he had been changed back. An odd image of newborn babies flashed through my mind. Was crying the natural reaction for anyone being bornââ¬âor, in this case, rebornââ¬âinto the world? A sudden movement grabbed my attention. Sydneyââ¬â¢s eyes were wide, and she was actually moving toward Dimitriââ¬âto stop him. ââ¬Å"What are you doing?ââ¬â¢ she cried. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t release her!ââ¬â¢ Dimitri ignored Sydney, and I caught hold of her, pulling her back. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s okay, itââ¬â¢s okay,ââ¬â¢ I said. Sydney was the most stable factor in this whole operation. I couldnââ¬â¢t have her freaking out. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s not Strigoi. Look. Look at her. Sheââ¬â¢s Moroi.ââ¬â¢ Sydney slowly shook her head. ââ¬Å"She canââ¬â¢t be. I just saw her.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s what happened to Dimitri. Exactly the same. You donââ¬â¢t think heââ¬â¢s a Strigoi, do you? You trust him.ââ¬â¢ I released my hold on her, and she stayed put, her face wary. Looking down at the brothers, I realized theirs might be a more serious situation than I had realized. Robert, while not a Strigoi, looked pale enough to be one. His eyes were vacant, drool escaping his partially open mouth. I reassessed my earlier observation about Robert making Strigoi restoration look easy. Heââ¬â¢d staked her like a pro, but obviously, there were a few side effects. Victor was trying to support his brother and murmured soothing and encouraging words. And on Victorââ¬â¢s face â⬠¦ well, there was a look of compassion and fear that Iââ¬â¢d never seen before. My brain didnââ¬â¢t entirely know how to reconcile it with my well-defined and villainous image of him. He seemed like a real person. Victor glanced up at me, his lips twisting into a bitter smile. ââ¬Å"What, no witty quips now? You should be happy. Weââ¬â¢ve given you what you wanted. You need answers from Sonya Karp?ââ¬â¢ He nodded toward her. ââ¬Å"Go get them. Theyââ¬â¢ve certainly come at a high price.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"No!ââ¬â¢ exclaimed Dimitri. He still held Sonya against him, but his gentle expression turned hard at Victorââ¬â¢s words. ââ¬Å"Are you crazy? Didnââ¬â¢t you see what just happened?ââ¬â¢ Victor arched an eyebrow. ââ¬Å"Yes. I noticed.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s in no condition to answer anything! Sheââ¬â¢s in shock. Leave her alone.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t act like sheââ¬â¢s the one whoââ¬â¢s suffering here,ââ¬â¢ snapped Victor. Turning back to Robert, Victor helped his brother stand and go toward the couch. Robert barely managed it, his legs trembling and then giving way as he sat down. Victor put an arm around Robert. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ll be all right. Everythingââ¬â¢s all right.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Will he be?ââ¬â¢ I asked uncertainly. Robert didnââ¬â¢t look like he was in all that good of shape. My earlier thoughts about spirit users saving Strigoi continued growing unrealistic. ââ¬Å"He â⬠¦ he did it before and recovered, right? And Lissaââ¬â¢s fine.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Robert was much youngerââ¬âas is Vasilisa,ââ¬â¢ replied Victor, patting Robertââ¬â¢s shoulder. ââ¬Å"And this is hardly a simple spell. Doing it even once is monumental. Twice? Well, you and I both know how spirit works, and this feat takes a toll on both body and mind. Robert has made a great sacrifice for you.ââ¬â¢ He had, I supposed. ââ¬Å"Thank you, Robert,ââ¬â¢ I said. The words came hesitantly to my lips. Robert didnââ¬â¢t seem to hear. Dimitri stood up, lifting Sonya easily in his arms. She was still crying, but her sobs were quieter now. ââ¬Å"She needs to rest,ââ¬â¢ he said gruffly. ââ¬Å"Believe me, you have no idea whatââ¬â¢s going on inside her right now.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Oh, I believe you,ââ¬â¢ I said. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re idiots,ââ¬â¢ snapped Victor. ââ¬Å"Both of you.ââ¬â¢ It was a wonder Dimitriââ¬â¢s glare didnââ¬â¢t pin Victor to the floor. ââ¬Å"No interrogation yet.ââ¬â¢ I nodded my agreement, not knowing what else to do. When Lissa had changed Dimitri, sheââ¬â¢d taken on a fierce, similarly protective attitude. He might not have been the one to change Sonya, but he was the only one here who had any idea what she was going through. I knew heââ¬â¢d had a hard adjustment and that the initial effects of the restoration had been disorienting. That wasnââ¬â¢t even taking into account the subsequent depression. He swept past all of us, taking Sonya to her bedroom. Sydney watched them go and then glanced over to the sofa, where Victor still had his arm wrapped around his brother. The Alchemist met my eyes wonderingly. ââ¬Å"I heard â⬠¦ but I didnââ¬â¢t believe.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Sometimes,ââ¬â¢ I told her, ââ¬Å"I still donââ¬â¢t. It goes against every rule of the universe.ââ¬â¢ To my surprise, she touched the small gold cross around her neck. ââ¬Å"Some rules are bigger than the universe.ââ¬â¢ Victor rose from the couch, apparently satisfied Robert was resting. I tensed up. Miracles aside, he was still a criminal, one I intended to capture. He took a step toward me, pitching his voice low. ââ¬Å"Sorry to interrupt Metaphysics 101, but you need to listen to me,ââ¬â¢ he said. ââ¬Å"Be careful, Rose. Very careful. A lot rests on you now. Donââ¬â¢t let your pet wolf keep you from finding out what Sonya knows.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"But heââ¬â¢s right,ââ¬â¢ I exclaimed. ââ¬Å"Its been five minutes! What she went through â⬠¦ what they both went through â⬠¦ well, itââ¬â¢s kind of a big deal. Literally life-changing. He had to recover too and adjust to being saved. Once she does, sheââ¬â¢ll help us.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Are you sure?ââ¬â¢ he asked, narrowing his eyes. ââ¬Å"Will she think sheââ¬â¢s been saved? You forget: Belikov was turned against his will. She wasnââ¬â¢t.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"W-what are you saying? That sheââ¬â¢s going to try to become Strigoi again?ââ¬â¢ He shrugged. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m saying get your answers soon. And donââ¬â¢t leave her alone.ââ¬â¢ With that, Victor turned and headed toward the kitchen. He soon returned with a glass of water. Robert drank it greedily and then fell into a heavy sleep. I sighed and leaned against a wall near Sydney, totally worn out. I still hurt from the earlier fight. ââ¬Å"What now?ââ¬â¢ asked Sydney. I shook my head. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know. We wait, I guess.ââ¬â¢ Dimitri returned a little while later and spared a small glance for Robert. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s sleeping too,ââ¬â¢ he told me. ââ¬Å"The transformation â⬠¦ itââ¬â¢s difficult.ââ¬â¢ I could see a haunted look in his eyes and wondered what memory was tormenting him now. The memory of being changed? The memory of being Strigoi? ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t think we should leave Sonya alone,ââ¬â¢ I said. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Victor smirk. ââ¬Å"Someone should stay with her in case she wakes up. She wonââ¬â¢t know whatââ¬â¢s going on.ââ¬â¢ Dimitri didnââ¬â¢t answer for a few seconds as he scrutinized me. He knew me well enough to sense there might be something else on my mind. Fortunately, he couldnââ¬â¢t find a fault in my logic. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re right. Do you mind sitting with her?ââ¬â¢ he asked Sydney. I groped for something to say. No, no. Not Sydney. If Sonya did turn on us, we needed someone else on guardââ¬âsomeone who could fight back. Sydney, probably guessing my problem, saved me from lying to Dimitriââ¬âor from telling him the truth about my concerns. ââ¬Å"She doesnââ¬â¢t know me. It might make things worse when she wakes up. Besides â⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢ Sydney put on that disgusted expression that Alchemists excelled at. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t really feel that comfortable with someone who was a monster five minutes ago.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s not Strigoi,ââ¬â¢ he exclaimed. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s absolutely, completely Moroi again!ââ¬â¢ Even I felt a little cowed by the harshness of his voice, but I wasnââ¬â¢t entirely surprised at his vehement reaction. Heââ¬â¢d had a hard time convincing others heââ¬â¢d changed. His face softened a little. ââ¬Å"I know itââ¬â¢s hard to believe, but she really has changed.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll stay with her then,ââ¬â¢ I said. ââ¬Å"No, no.ââ¬â¢ Dimitri shook his head. ââ¬Å"Sydneyââ¬â¢s right about one thing: Sonya might be confused. Itââ¬â¢s better if someoneââ¬â¢s there who understands whatââ¬â¢s happened.ââ¬â¢ I started to argue that I was the only one Sonya really knew but then decided Iââ¬â¢d rather stay with the brothers. They seemed harmless now, but I didnââ¬â¢t trust them. Dimitri apparently didnââ¬â¢t either. He took a few steps forward and leaned down, speaking only an inch from my ear. ââ¬Å"Keep an eye on them,ââ¬â¢ he murmured. ââ¬Å"Robertââ¬â¢s down right now but might recover sooner than we think.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"I know.ââ¬â¢ He started to turn, then glanced back at me. His commander face had softened into something thoughtful and awestruck. ââ¬Å"Rose?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Yeah?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"That â⬠¦ was that what it was like when Lissa changed me?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"More or less.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t realize â⬠¦ it was â⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢ He struggled for words. It was uncharacteristic. ââ¬Å"The way that light filled the room, the way she changed. Seeing that life emerge from death â⬠¦ it was â⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Beautiful?ââ¬â¢ He nodded. ââ¬Å"Life like that â⬠¦ you donââ¬â¢tââ¬âno, you canââ¬â¢t waste it.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"No,ââ¬â¢ I agreed. ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t.ââ¬â¢ I saw something shift in him then. It was small, just like in the alley, but I knew then another piece of the Strigoi-trauma had peeled away. He said no more, and I watched as he walked back down the hall. With nothing else to do, Sydney sat down cross-legged on the floor, holding a book in her lap. It was closed, her thoughts clearly elsewhere. Meanwhile, Victor sat back in the armchair and reclined it. He didnââ¬â¢t look as bad as Robert, but lines of fatigue showed on both brothers. Good. The longer they were out of commission, the better. I brought in a chair from the kitchen so I could sit and survey the room. Everything was peaceful. I felt like a babysitter, which I suppose I kind of was. It had been a long day, and night soon turned the windows black. This made worried me. For all I knew, Sonya had some Strigoi pals who might stop by. The fact that Donovan knew her certainly indicated she wasnââ¬â¢t a total outcast among them. It made me extra-vigilant, but at the same time, I was exhausted. The brothers were already asleep. Sydney, perhaps in an attempt to keep her human schedule, eventually found a spare blanket and pillow and curled up in a makeshift bed on the floor. And me? I was halfway between human and vampiric schedules. I had a feeling Dimitri was the same. Really, we were on a do-whatââ¬â¢s-necessary schedule, in which extensive sleep was not an option. A hum of excitement and astonishment suddenly sang through the bond. I sensed no danger or threat, but curiosity made me decide to check in with Lissa anyway. Even if I was in her mind, I knew my body would stay watchful, and I wanted to know how the rest of Lissaââ¬â¢s test had gone. Beautifully, of course. She rode back to Court, exhausted but proud of herself. She wasnââ¬â¢t the only one. The rest of her companions all wore similar expressions â⬠¦ all except for Ava Drozdov. She had been the only one to break and use the cell phone to call for help. Lissa was surprised that Ava had cracked. After his earlier bitching, Marcus Lazar had seemed the most likely to bail. But no, the old man had managed it somehow, meaning heââ¬â¢d continue on in the monarch trials. Ava refused to make eye contact with anyone, instead staring bleakly out the window as they traveled back to Court. She would still hold a Council spot, but her shot at being queen was gone. Lissa felt bad for her but couldnââ¬â¢t spare too much concern. It was the way of the trials, the way they determined the best candidates. Besides, Lissa had her own issues. Staying out in the daytime had run contrary to the normal vampiric schedule. Now, she simply wanted to get back to Court, find her room, and sleep for a few hours. She wanted some peace. Instead, she found a mob waiting for her. How to cite Last Sacrifice Chapter Eighteen, Essay examples

Racism The Future Essay Example For Students
Racism The Future Essay Racism People see it everyday across America. A group of whites burn down a black church, someone gets hurt or murdered from a racial slur, or fights break out at school or in public. These are the extremes of racism. Racism is definitely not a good thing, its a power that has taken over through the last two years. In doing research on Racism, I hope that my feelings towards blacks would improve and they have. What will the future bring for Racism? What are the main problems of racism? Can we get a hold on racism throughout America or will we self-destruct in our own hate? Racism is everywhere, as much as today tries to hide it or say that we resolved it forty-to-fifty years ago. Racism is still all over the place. Racism first showed it teeth in America, when the segregation of blacks and whites came along. The segregation shut down all activities or actions from whites and blacks. It absolutely separated whites and blacks from being close to each other in public and blacks having no rights. Then the movement took place when Rosa Parks wouldnt give up her seat to a white man on a bus. At the time she was tired of the treatment her and fellow African-Americans were getting. She said she was tired and on this fateful day she bgan the turning wheels of the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights Movement took place and gave blacks their future as they have now. It gave them the freedom that they deserved and needed. They were given the ability to vote; not having to be separated in such insane ways against whites, as they were. Positive helpers in the role of blacks rights were Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. King had a dream that little black boys and girls would be able to join hands with little white boys and girls. His dream came true. On April 4th 1968, King was leaving his motel room. When he was shot and killed (Schulke). 2Everybody knows what racism is, but there are so many other factors that tie in with racism. If someone is a racist they are of course, prejudice. Prejudice is when someone doesnt like someone for the way they look. A big problem with racism is many live in racist conditions and dont even see it. It flies right over their heads. Schools, the workplace, our community, our friends house, even our homes. We hear a racial slur, oh well, its just a joke. Hardly. If you think racist joke are harmless than you should take a reality check. Racist jokes are just the start of it. Many people think the jokes are funny. Maybe they are, but they still hurt the people the jokes are about. Some of the worst racists are the ones who think that they are not racist, and they really are. They really have to come to grips with reality. Why are they some the worst racists? They are, because they cant comprehend what is happening. They dont realize what they are saying and doing are racist. Until they c ome to grips with it, there is no problem. No problem, in their minds. They say that they arent racist, even when they dont hire the East Indian employee who was the most qualified of the candidates. Even when the basketball team that they coach is all white. And even the time when they moved from their seat at the movie theater because of the black person next to them. Well, gee, they could have been a criminal. A robber from the hood. After all, isnt that what most of them are. No one deserves to be prejudged like that. The prejudice of people in the world is disgusting. The worst part of it all is that they dont even know that they are doing it. They think its normal behavior, it doesnt even phase them when they do it. .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561 , .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561 .postImageUrl , .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561 , .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561:hover , .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561:visited , .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561:active { border:0!important; } .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561:active , .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561 .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1f3c79a81dfa6275fa8d6f5940001561:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Education Makes People Easy to Lead but Difficult to Drive EssayBorn of the civil rights movement three decades ago, affirmative action calls for minorities and women to be given special consideration in employment, education and contracting decisions. In its modern form, affirmative action can call for an admissions officer faced with two similarly qualified applicants to choose the minority over the white, or for a manager to recruit and hire a qualified woman for a job instead of a man. Affirmative action decisions are generally not supposed to be based on quotas, nor are they supposed to give any preference to unqualified candidates (Froomkin). And they are not suppose d to harm anyonethrough reverse discrimination.3Then there are those who are completely unaware of racism in the world. They walk down the streets, through the stores and working at their job, completely oblivious. Theyre so blind! Why cant they see what is happening around them? Have they really lived such sheltered lives? Or do they just not want to believe it is happening? If you take someone and put them in the heart of a racist area, they still wont notice the problems. They will see it with their own eyes, but it wont register in their mind. If these people dont open their eyes, they will never see what is happening. What is going to happen to the world if people dont start realizing what is happening? Will we be plunged into a time where racial tension is everywhere? Will we soon start having racial wars? Will racial violence be a normal every day occurrence? I dont know. No one could know. Unless we start taking action and helping people come to grips with the way they are, we cant combat racism. Today we are living in a load of social issues that we have to deal with and racism is one of them. For some reason many people cant figure out, is why are many standards being lowered? The government has given blacks many ways to get in and out of college and its not fair for the average white person. Throughout history blacks havent always been the smartest people. They have consistently under performed in IQ (Emeagwali). A black athlete then doesnt have to be as smart as the average white athlete to get into college. Blacks blame their faults and disappointments against society and the whole race in which they live in. They say that since they grew up in a poor family, they cant do good or excel, but anyone can do good or excel if they put their mind to it. This is not a one sided situation though. Whites can be the same way. Many whites grow up in poor families, and they cant use excuses either. Some whites live in a trailer so they say that they cant succ eed in anything. I have friends that act this way. There isnt but one
